A grout-free bathroom without stripping the old tiles
Large-format PVC and SPC wall panels are 100% waterproof and go straight onto the existing tiles. One panel measures 280 × 122 cm and covers about 3.4 m², so a shower wall often ends up with no grout line at all.
Why panels instead of tiles?
Because the old tiles can stay on the wall. That saves the demolition, the fine dust through the whole house, the disposal costs and the week or two without a usable bathroom. What is left: clean, degrease, glue.
The second difference is the grout. A tiled shower wall of 3 m² quickly adds up to tens of metres of grout, and that is exactly where mould takes hold. A panel has none.
PVC or SPC for a bathroom?
PVC wall panels are glued flat and are the logical choice over existing tiles: 280 × 122 cm, 3 mm thick, from 49 € per panel.
SPC wall panels with a click system are 4 mm thick and stiffer. A set of three panels of 60 × 280 cm forms one continuous composition of 180 × 280 cm.
Frequently asked questions
Can you glue wall panels over tiles?
Yes, that is what they are made for. The old tiles must be firmly attached, flat, and thoroughly degreased before gluing. If a tile is loose, knock it out and fill the gap. On a genuinely uneven wall, use battens instead of gluing directly.
Does mould disappear once the grout is gone?
Partly. You remove the place where mould settles most easily, but the cause is still moisture and too little fresh air. Ventilation is still required.
Are the panels suitable for the shower itself?
Yes, including the walls inside the shower enclosure and behind the bath. What decides watertightness is the corners, the edge to the floor and the joint with the shower tray or bath. Those are sealed with mould-resistant sanitary silicone.
How many panels do I need?
One panel equals roughly 3.4 m². Divide your wall area by 3.4 and round up. For a shower wall alone you usually land on one or two panels. For adhesive, count on about 2 m² per 600 ml cartridge, available with the mounting accessories.
